Sustainability and the Built Environment of the St. Louis Region

St. Louis Magazine has published its anual 'Fall Arts Preview' and the exhibit I've been working on with all kinds of cool people - especially Dana Gray and Gina Alvarez of the Guild - is featured. Here is an image of the cover and our place in the issue - next to some pretty interesting shows to catch as well. Click on the image to enlarge.

Habitat for Humanity and the Case Equipment Rodeo

I went to my first 'heavy equipment rodeo' on this past rainy Saturday. Many operators compete in skills tests on front loaders, skid loaders and backhoes. Time and a delicate touch are the main skills to demonstrate. The event had a dual function as a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis and that is the reason that brought me there.

Habitat staff and volunteers, like me, shared info and opportunities with the crowd. William McHugh, the Habitat Construction Manager did a fine job as a competitor as well

Construction Schedules and Our Current Economic Conditions

A few observations about the new 'normal' in our industry:

The best of the best have jobs and have work

No one has a backlog that provides the confidence to hire additional staff

Very few anticipate anything but prolonged tough times - another year or two at best

With the above assumptions/conditions work is being hoarded and protected in ways I have not seen before. Construction schedules and timelines are difficult to meet in this scenario.

I spoke with a construction business manager who recently laid off nearly a dozen employees because he had work lined up to take him to next March if he he kept everyone or to November with the lay-offs. He believes this is an essential survival move.

Timber Frame in Progress

These parts will be installed in the next month or so on a project that is part of my regular gig. Skinned with 6-1/2" SIPS, triple glazed windows, geothermal hvac and much of the lumber cut from the land.

Please Share: Deadline Extended for Submissions on Sustainability and the Built Environment of the St. Louis Region links to the revised prospectus.

The new deadline is 9/16/2011. Now gather up your work and take a chance! I am.

Larger, in progress projects may be submitted. The work doesn't have to be completed upon submission or acceptance especially if it is a big, long, involved project. Often times in progress architectural/design projects are interesting and applicable in the process state. We have had some questions and concerns regarding this matter.
